Baby Names

Remember that you are picking a name for life. Here are some considerations for you to take into account:
- Consider how the name sounds when it is applied to an adult aswell as a baby.
- Some names will inevitably cause your child to be picked on at school. For example calling a boy Sarah is going to cause a problem.
- The meaning of a name may be a nice basis for a name but it shouldn’t be the only reason you pick it. In the real world it’s the name that matters not its meaning.
- Consider how the name will fit with your surname. Does it fit nicely? For example Henrietta is not good if your surname is Carrott.
- Think about family history. Is there someone you can name the baby after? Is there a name that has been used throughout your families generations?
- Avoid names associated with unwanted personality traits. Elvis and Kylie make people think of musical icons, is this what you want for your child?
- Try using the name you’ve chosen for a week or so. You’ll be amazed how many people do this and get sick of the name before the end of even the first few days.
- Don’t just pick a name that’s unusual for the sake of it. In time you may regret it.
- Initials of a person’s name can spell words or create well known acronyms. Eg. Peter Matthew Tromans (PMT) would be a poor choice.
- Think about the spelling. It might be cool to have an unusual spelling of a common name but think about how many times your child will correct people in their lifetime.
