Diabetes…

26 February 2010 No Comment

In the last couple of weeks Alfie has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It’s been a stressful time but thankfully he is back on his feet now and we are coming to terms with the management of the condition.
Alfie is having four blood tests a day and on top of that four injections of insulin. It doesn’t end there though – he is now on a diet which involves counting his carb/sugar intake.
Looking at Alfie today you wouldn’t have any idea as to how ill he was in recent weeks. The nurses at the hospital were fantastic, as were the doctors, they do a tough job day in day out and deserve a lot of credit for it – Special thanks go to Simon and Liz who are our dedicated support nurses.

On a different subject, it’s now less than 8 weeks until we see the arrival of our second child. As I told you before, we know it’s going to be a boy and I think his arrival will be good for Alfie. How cool will it be having a playmate on hand 24 hours a day?
Given that it’s only 8 weeks to go I have been trying to help my wife prepare a hospital bag just in case. So far it consists of slippers. I think we need to get our act together or we’ll have a last minute panic which I’m desperate to avoid.

You’re probably thinking will the little boy due in April be affected by diabetes. Well the answer is that it is unlikely given the lack of family but as we found out with Alfie you just never really know what can happen around the corner.
