Don’t be Afraid to Get Your Hands Dirty
Being a SUPER DAD does not require you to have been sent here from a planet located in a far off galaxy. You don’t need to have super strength, an awesome costume (complete with cape), or the looks of a Greek God. Being a SUPER DAD only requires you to be there and be supportive. Your children don’t care how old you are, if you are a race car driver or nerdy IT guy. The size of your house and cost of your car means nothing. In your child’s eyes you are already a super hero because you are their dad and that is all that matters. Your child already knows that if you were out and a group of ninjas came to attack you that you could fight them off. He knows that if you were in a car chase and the bad guys were following you that you could lose them. All you have to do is be able to sit with them and talk about their favorite cartoons, read them books, and be able to play video games with them and they will love you no less than they would if you were able to leap tall buildings.
Remember what it was like when you were young and your dad would come home from work or take you out somewhere? The admiration you felt for him is no different than what your child feels for you. Nothing is better, especially for a son, than to spend a couple hours doing “guy stuff” with your dad. When you shave and your son wants to watch, pull up a stool, put some shaving cream on his face, give him something safe to use and shave together. Playing army, wrestling in the living room, watching cartoons and scary movies, these are the things that last in your child’s memories forever.
Fatherhood is a dirty job. There are poopy diapers to change, vomit to clean up, toilets that need unclogging, and bugs that need killing. Broken hearts will need mending and broken bones will need Dr. vistis. When these disasters strike, who does your family call on? You! You are the dad and dad is the super hero in their lives.
A lot of times fathers tend to over analyze what it means to be a SUPER DAD but really is simple, just be there. Take the effort to show up to sporting events, know their teacher’s names, be active in their lives because before you know it, they will be grown up and you won’t have a chance to be that knight in shining armor anymore. So roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty because there is nothing more rewarding at the end of the day than hearing you child say “I love you Daddy,” as they are falling asleep.
