My Teenager Drives

I put off enabling my son to drive for as long as I could, but he passed the driver’s test on his third try and succeeded in getting his grades up to our agreed-upon level. I couldn’t delay it any longer. He now drives. As a native Southern Californian, I grew up in a car culture and time when we got our licenses literally on the day of our 16th birthday, or the Monday after, if our luck was really bad.
Thankfully, it isn’t that easy anymore. Driving, in this ...

The Joy of Meeting People

Meeting people in real life, in person, is cool. I write and speak a greatbout technology and social interaction. It’s my belief that modern technology offers wondrous things but, as with just about everything, there is a down side. That “down side” is that you can be lulled to believe that you can do everything you need to do from the comfort of your computer. Yes, you can do much more than at any time in human history, but the value of direct people contact cannot be replaced ...

You Hurt My Feelings

Those four words — “You hurt my feelings” — are my least favorite words to hear from my wife. I’d rather hear, “I love you?” What’s most difficult about those four words is that you can’t deny them. Feelings are feelings and they’re not up for debate. For most men, the ease with which we can incur those four words is a mystery. This applies even in non-marital circumstances, as I will elaborate on later.
I love my wife. But, when she utters those four words, I ...

Bigger Arms in 5 Minutes

As busy dads we no longer have the luxury to try the latest Muscle and Fiction magazine arm workout that takes over an hour and leaves us unable to comb what’s left of our hair for a week due to the intense muscle soreness that follows.
So as you focus on the bigger movements and muscles in your workouts (which you should), to get maximum results in minimum time I came up with three different sneaky arm training tricks that you can pick from. Insert one into your regular workout and ...

I Want It NOW!

When I was a kid, my birthday excursion each year was a trip to Disneyland. This was back-in-the-day when Disneyland was not only fun, but not overly crowded. It was also when they sold tickets that were labeled “A” through “E,” with the “E-ticket” being for the better rides, like the Matterhorn. The expression “E-ticket Ride” came directly from those early Disneyland tickets. Later, as we all know, Disneyland and all amusement parks switched to a single admission entrance fee.
I couldn’t sleep the night before we ...

Parental Hypocrisy Is Not a Good Parenting Style

I’m an avid skier and this past season I took on a role I never expected. I became the “helmet police,” whenever I saw people not wearing a helmet. I did my police work in a polite, respectful manner, but I couldn’t help but get a bit more passionate when I confronted “Parental Hypocrisy” in its finest: with skiing parents and their kids. Parental Hypocrisy is not taught in Parenting Classes or is a recommended Parenting skill or style.
It is amazing to me how many moms and dads ...

Computer Addiction, Technology, and Me

Technology has me in its grasp. It won’t let go. It’s got me by the proverbial – what do you call those things you juggle? Is this “Computer addiction?” I didn’t realize that I was its victim until I reflected on my growing use and, yes, dependence on “My Tech!” But, saying I’m its “victim” is a large exaggeration since I’m really its beneficiary and it has changed my life, mostly for the better. My second career is a total result of the opportunities that modern technology and “Social ...

A Dirty Little Parenting Secret

Let’s call it “Dramatic license,” as I totally adore my family and wouldn’t trade them or my life with anyone else, but at this moment, time, and place, I don’t like them very much. Just as movies often put up a title card that says, “Based On a True Story,” and we know the filmmakers may be playing loose with the facts, so it is with this column. Sibling rivalry is prevalent but, it’s my “dirty little parenting secret” that not only do siblings fight but parents occasionally just don’t ...

Over-Stepping As a Step-Parent

As I begin writing this column, I find it ironic how little I’ve written about conflicts in my home between my wife, my boys, and me over our blended family. My wife “inherited” my two boys and my two dogs when she agreed to marry me. Having not had kids, she never expected to be a step-mom, let alone to two boys living at home full-time.
Oddly enough, I never expected to marry again and certainly if I did, I only expected to marry a divorced mother. So, my ...

Why Do They Like the Scariest Horror Movies?

Why do so many people, especially teenagers, like the scariest horror movies? What happened to wholesome family movies? What happened to actors and characters like Fred MacMurray, Mary Poppins, Lassie, and the good guy being cool? When did Fred become Freddy (from the “Nightmare on Elm Street” movies)? Or for that matter, what happened to Fred Flintstone and Wilma?
Yes, times have changed, but this is one of those areas that I resist and don’t understand. A good scary movie is one thing, but movies that exist simply to portray ...
