Laugh with your children

6 January 2010 No Comment

Believe it or not having fun with you kids can keep you healthy. In our lifetimes most of us will hear the adage “Laughter is the best medicine” and research suggests that this really is true.

According to research laughter contributes towards the prevention of Heart disease. In this research carried out to find out more about the heart and blood vessels it suggests that by laughing with your family on a regular basis you will improve the health of your heart whilst spending time with the people you love. That’s not to say it’s time to cancel the gym membership, ditch the exercise bike and stop going for the occasional jog.

In the meantime you can now officially act the fool and claim it’s on Doctors orders – that’s what I tell my wife anyway.

Laughing, joking and giggling with the kids to make yourself healthy?! – who said being healthy was difficult and not enjoyable.

There are many methods for making your children laugh which in turn may bring a smile to your face and hopefully some laughter too. Here are five Superdads recommendations:

1) Playing the fool.

Being a dad means you probably play the fool already but you really can take advantage of many situations to bring a smile to your little ones face. Acting extra clumsy or pretending not to know the answers to things they’ll know will bring about hours of fun. It’ll also strike up conversation because you will be able to ask you child questions and they will feel proud to be able to tell you the answer.
2) Be silly.

Whether you’re going to walk in a silly way , pull a funny face, dance like a drunk or speak like one of the chipmunks your kids are going to love it. Each of these methods will get your kids chuckling and will also enable you to giggle along with them.
3) Play peek-a-boo or Pat-a-cake.

Whether your hiding behind the sofa and popping up to a little peek-a-boo or you’re sitting with your child playing pat-a-cake you’ll have a really great response from your child and it’s so much fun too.
4) Tickling.

Tickling your kids is great so long as you know when to stop. Tickling your kids will bring them to laugh from deep in their bellies which is that infectious type of laughter. Soon you’ll be laughing as much as they are. The thing is, although kiddies love being tickled if you keep going and don’t stop either when they say or when you feel they’ve had enough it can bring on the tears. So enjoy tickling your kids as they’ll love it but don’t overwhelm them.
5) Singing songs and making funny noises

Kids love funny sounds. Blow a raspberry with your lips and your child will chuckle, blow a raspberry on their bellies and they’ll laugh heartily. Similarly sing a nursery rhyme to your child and they will smile, emphasis certain words and they will laugh out loud. For example, when singing “pop goes the weasel” to your little one pause prior to the word “POP” and then say it a little louder than normal and you’re guaranteed a chuckle.
It is fairly easy to make your kids laugh but it’s also easy to forget that laughter is important. Life is hectic and people are rushing around from one task to another, going to work, doing the shopping, cooking the tea etc etc etc and they forget that life is for living and enjoying. We shouldn’t get caught up with just going through the motions. Take a step back from it and remember one thing – Laughter really is the best medicine!!
