Paternity Leave in my thoughts already…

16 October 2009 No Comment

I decided this morning to submit my request for Paternity leave. The strange thing with paternity leave though is that you’re asking for time off that is as yet to be determined. I’ve submitted the form anyway though so I’m half way to sorting out my leave for when the baby arrives. Next up I need to add in an extra weeks leave but I’ll do this at a later date from my annual leave allowance.
My line manager is good with personal issues and will allow me to move the leave to suit when the time comes so the dates I book off are merely an indicator of the length of time I’ll be out of the office.

Paternity leave is one of the things in life that seems to have slipped under the radar when we talk about equality in the workplace. Women, albeit they have the hard job to do, get up to 12 months off but men still only qualify for 2 weeks. I know that there are considerations to amend this and balance it up but it’ll probably be too late for me to benefit. Oh well, at least I’ll have two weeks at home with my family and I’m sure I’ll make the best of them.

Following on from a previous update I’d like to quickly mention Morning sickness again. I was hoping my wife would feel sick around the smell of fish or at least something I don’t like this time around. No such luck though – she feels sick at the smell of mixed peppers which doesn’t do my appetite for Mexican food any favours.
