Scans

Scans are enjoyable for both you and your partner

Attending the Scans can be a fantastic experience. It will give you your very first glimpse of little “peanut”, “bean” or “mini me”. ( Most people have some form of nickname for their baby during the early stages of their development )

An example of a 12 week scan photo

At the 12 week scan….. it provides the midwife an opportunity to examine the development of your baby. This scan, sometimes called the Nuchal scan but more often known as the dating scan, will detect if more than one baby in expected……. so prepare yourself for the possibility of a double surprise. The 12 week scan is also used to detect the heartbeat of the baby, ensuring that you baby is alive and kicking ( well so to be kicking anyway ) and it also gives the midwife chance to take the measurements relevant in determining the due date.

An example of a 20 week scan photo

At the 20 week scan….. you are able to see a lot more detail that at the 12 week one.  Firstly the you will be checked to ensure that there is only one baby, because in some cases the second child is not apparent until 20 weeks. As well as checking the size of the baby to check development the scan will show detailed information about the heart, kidneys, stomach and bladder of your child. This is obviously the most important part of the scan but the most exciting bit, depending on your wish to know, is the sexing of your child. The 20 week scan can, not always but most of the time, give visiblility of whether your partner is expecting a boy or a girl. You must consider though that sometimes the sexing can be wrong. The hospital can not be held responsible for you buying everytthing in pink only for you to have a son. Due to the risk of being wrong you may find some hospitals will not inform you of the babies sex.

3D and 4D Scans

These scans provide the next level in Scan photos. They are incredible but yet, in my opinion, quite eerie in some respects. The difference between the 3d and 4d scans is simply that 3d is a still photograph whilst 4d is effectively a movie. The picture below shows what sort of image you may get with a 3d/4d scan.

Here are some providers for 4D scans that you may find useful:

Hey! That’s my daughter in the 20 week scan photo!!
Her nickname was “Vlinder” (Dutch for “Butterfly”), but in the end, she came out Freya. And as beautiful in real life as in the scan.
(By the way, you should have asked permission to use that image. Tisk tisk!)

I remember when I was pregnant with my first child, I used to look forward to the scans so much. It made things seem so much more real, especially when you get to physically see your child, it’s amazing. It was also nice to know that there weren’t any health issues, which as any parent will know, this dominates your thinking during pregnancy.
