When a child is born…
I can’t believe I haven’t updated this blog for 2 months. The days are zipping past and Father Time is showing no remorse as the days get busier and busier.
So what’s been going on? March was a busy month, we were getting together all the last minute things in anticipation of our new arrival. They wouldn’t have been last minute but for my lack of organisation, like I say it’s been a busy time. April was the month of change. Charlie was born in the early hours of 17th April weighing in at 7lb 8.5 lbs. A little cutie just like his brother – obviously I’m biased but in all honestly they really are lovely boys.
So it all kicked off on 16th April. It was 11pm on the Friday night and I was playing the Wii. ( The Wii I bought for my wife at Christams which she has only used once). My gaming soon came to an end though as my Wife started with twinges. Twinges that were coming every ten minutes, soon to be relabelled as Labour pains. She had been experiencing some pains quite frequently through the week so I put it down to Braxton Hicks and off we went to bed. How wrong was I? By 1am my parents were at our house to take up the role of baby-sitting Alfie as we made our way to the hospital. Sparing you the detail, from that point it was over in a flash – Charlie was born at 3.16am.
It’s a little strange after the birth of a child, you just seem to stare at the baby and time passes very quickly as you try to regain your emotional stability. The realisation that 9 months of waiting is over and you have become a father again is brilliant. I am now really proud when I can talk about “my kids”. Being a dad is just great.
Following the birth I decided to talk two weeks off work. One as Paternity and one week as leave. It’s just not enough – given half a chance I’d be taking two months of let alone two weeks. The sooner the imbalance in Paternity/maternity leave is addressed the better. Clearly the Mother has the hard work to do at the labour but when the labour is over both parents want to be with their child, hopefully this will all change soon.
Going back to work has been a nightmare. Working in finance I have regular busy spells at the end of every month, which just coincided with my return to the office, as did the annual budgets, the exams of one of my team and the holiday of another. Busy, busy, busy !!! Then I get home each day to do my real job – being dad.
Like I said earlier being a dad is great. Alfie has started greeting me each night with Hello dada in a way that only he could. He even managed to phone me at work recently which really brightened my day.
In the weeks ahead we have many things to do, changes to the house are ongoing, organising Alfie’s 2nd birthday bash and fundraising (more detail to come in future blogs) are on the agenda for the coming months but for now I will bid you farewell.
